Don’t pinch Yvette Landry. She may discover the last nine months have only been a dream.

A fantasy-come-true is the only way Landry, a science teacher, former Crawfish Festival Queen and single mother, can explain the international buzz about her debut CD,Should Have Known. Landry’s disc of 16 original country songs was ranked on roots music charts higher than releases by Merle Haggard, Charley Pride, Jimmy Buffett and other legends. The CD has received radio airplay from Canada to Australia. The BBC even called Landry at her home in Breaux Bridge as she was taking out the trash.

“They wanted to know, ‘Do you have a European press agent or do you do everything from the United States?’” says Landry. “I was looking at my iPhone going, ‘Yeah, it’s pretty much from the United States.’ It makes me laugh because I’m reading emails and getting these calls while I’m washing dishes. It’s life as usual for me, but it’s pretty exciting.”

The excitement continues as Landry makes her solo debut at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Landry is no music rookie, having spent years playing and touring with Cajun bands such as Balfa Toujours, the Lafayette Rhythm Devils and the all-female Cajun group Bonsoir, Catin. But few expected the splash created by her first solo work. Freeform American Roots, a chart created by 3rd Coast Music of Austin, Texas, named Should Have Known the 2010 Debut Album of the Year. In March, Landry played SXSW with Cindy Cashdollar sitting in on steel guitar, and she earned a cherished spot at the 25-year-old Festival International de Louisiane.

Despite her music success, Landry is not quite ready to quit her daily roles as a science teacher. “I don’t get much sleep,” says Landry. “You’ve got to be organized. I make lists and I scratch off and make more lists. In between gigs and everything else, I go to (my son’s) rugby games and soccer games. It never stops, but it’s been an incredible ride.”
